Scholarships 101

Updated: Nov 26, 2019

There are two main types of scholarships-

#1-Need Based Scholarships

Need Based has to do solely with your family’s financial situation. Make certain that you will fill out the FAFSA in October. This year it begins October 1st your senior year.

*For Junior and Senior year-There are SAT, ACT, and AP Test Waivers that are Need based. Please see your counselor to get set up asap.

Reality vs. the Stereotype

You do not have to be a “poor” person to qualify for Need Based Scholarships. Don't skip applications because you feel bad about taking money from people with a higher need than you. Most people can’t afford all of the costs of a quality college education. Let the organization giving out the money make that decision. There are plenty of times that an organization has only a handful of people who apply.

#2-Merit Based Scholarships

Everything other than Need Based

Grades- Are you making A's and B's?

Classes- Are you taking challenging classes?

Activities- Are you in activities that shows your passion, dedication, and trustworthiness?

Essays- Many have a simple application and choose from essays.

Character- Leadership Roles? Rec Letters? or do you have any Achievements?
